iTunes/Finder crashing on iPod connect

In my two years of Mac ownership I have never had as many problems as my iPod/Mac connection has given me. 9 times out of 10, when I connect the iPod, either iTunes will crash, the Finder will crash, the iPod will crash, or any combonation of the 3 will happen.

Other than this, I don't have any computer-related or iPod-related issues. So what the hell is going on? I have iTunes set for manual syncing and I don't have any files (besides music) on my iPod.

What do I need to do here, any suggestions?

First of all, I'd open the disk utility and do a verify/repair permissions and/or disk integrity on the iPod.

Then, I'd be checking out the http://www.apple.com/support site to see if I can find instructions to reload the iPod firmware. If so, that would be my next step.
