Jaz drive noisy

Anybody have a jaz drive? I have a used one with one cartidge that came with my free computers. It is intermitently noisy and after install it does not appear on desk top but I can access it through Jaz tools. It appears to have initialing problems. Could it be just a bad cartridge or do you think unit is bad? It did read ok once but still did not show up on desk top. I have read mixed things about Jaz drives any suggestions?

I had two Jaz cartridges. The one was so noisy I had to leave the room when I took backups. The other was fine. One had black, plastic kind of back and the other was metallic. I think the metallic was the noisy one. But other than the noise, they worked fine.
