I have a G4/500 SP with 1280 Meg RAM, 80 Gig ATA drive, 120 Gig Firewire external drive, a Radeon 8500 driving a 19" Sony and a 15" Sony monitor. I'm running OS X 10.2.2. About every three or four days, the machine will kernel panic when I wake the screens. The machine is NOT set to sleep; the Energy Saver preference panel is set to never sleep the computer, and to sleep the displays after about 20 minutes. Hard drives aren't put to sleep.
There's nothing in the system log to indicate trouble. All that happens is, when I hit the keyboard to wake up the displays, the system kernel panics. I can tell that's the instant the machine freezes, because the clock stops at the time I hit the keyboard.
Hard to troubleshoot because there are no other symptoms. But it's annoying. I'm glad I have a journaling file system...
