Low Battery Warning

For some reason my MacBook Pro is not warning me when my battery is near depletion at the most inconvenient times. Sometimes it does, if I am not working in any design programs or if I am not doing anything too strenuous on it's power requirements. But more often than not, when there is still about 30 or so % remaining, it just shuts down. I lose all work and can't understand why it's doing this. I plug the computer back in to it's power source and it still says there is that same amount of battery left. It happens even sometimes when I am not designing and just typing or going through emails or websites. I only try to drain to it's lowest point for battery life preservation.

Any thoughts?

And how old is the MacBook Pro?
Is the battery the one it shipped with?
Have you calibrated the battery sometimes or regularly?
What is the battery cycle count? (from Apple logo > about this Mac >> More info... > power)
