Mac Mimi M2 Sonoma 14.6.1 Opens wrong files when clicked

This is getting super frustrating. When I click on an Illustrator file, it might open Word.
I click on a PDF and it might open something else.
If I search for a particular file, I'm shown the file but when I click on it, it's not the correct file.
What can I do? This is my work computer and I'm getting behind!

Have you restarted? Have you run First Aid from Disk Utility?
Those are the free ones. Many others are available.

You could update to OS 15.1.1, the newest.

While I was waiting, I ran Disk First Aid, it found a couple things but said all was okay. Maybe it did a minor repair.
Restarted many times and now thinking about updating to 15.
I'll see if the DFA worked okay and will download the update overnight (SLOOOWWW work network!)

Also I have a tip for you! There is domination ware called Onyx and if once every three months run all the ‘Maintenance’ routines and let the program reboot your machine to keep in running well! Also if your not a Thermal dude then consider the free program ThinkerTool!
