Mac OS X 10.4: About the utilities available on the Mac OS X 10.4 Install DVD

The Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger Install DVD not only lets you install Mac OS X 10.4 on your computer, it also features several powerful utilities that are available to use whenever you start up your computer from the disc. Here's a closer look at these utilities and what they can do for you.

Disk Utility

You can accomplish a bunch of maintenance tasks with Disk Utility when your computer is started from the Mac OS X 10.4 Install DVD. From the Apple menu, choose Disk Utility to open it.

System Profiler

System Profiler can quickly show you what hardware is installed in your computer, how much RAM you have, your computer's serial number, and what versions of software are installed on the Mac OS X 10.4 volume. It's also a handy utility if you ever call AppleCare technical support for assistance.

To access it while started from the Install disc, choose System Profiler from the Utilities menu.

System Profiler also lets you save, print, and send profiles to Apple, but only when your computer is started from your regular Mac OS X 10.4 volume (when it is, find System Profiler in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder).

Network Utility

This utility lets you diagnose your Ethernet network connection while started from the Install disc. It works with your computer's built-in Ethernet port, and requires a connection to a DHCP server. Most broadband networks and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use DHCP. This means that Network Utility doesn't check AirPort or other non-Ethernet types of network connections.

If you are having connectivity issues and Network Utility doesn't find a problem with your connection, then you know that your networking hardware (including the Ethernet port, cable, and so forth) are not the source of the issue—most likely, software might be the suspect.

Network Utility also has Info and Ping tools available for advanced troubleshooters. These tools can display information about the network, or test the connection to a specific IP address.

Terminal

Terminal is a powerful, advanced troubleshooting tool that allows you to issue UNIX commands in its command line interface to accomplish tasks. You can access this utility while started from the Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger Install disc. To do this, from the Utilities menu, choose Terminal.

If you can access a volume (or a hard disk), you can save things to it using Terminal. You can also use it to print from a volume.
