Mac os x and HP LJ 3500

I am trying to connect a networked HP LJ 3500 to a mac os x machine. The driver should come as part of os but it doesnt (in this case anyway). I have tried installing the driver from the HP website but the mac never lists it as an available driver. So when I print I just get rubbish. Any help would be appreciated.
