Mac OS X and Linux server issues

I work in a digital prepress that is dealing with an odd problem. When we are in OS X (10.3.3) and copy or save files to our Red Hat Linux server (Samba daemon) they become corrupt. Here's one scenario; the file's icon will change (a PDF becomes a font, making it unusable). Sometimes we will open a file to see it has become a completely different file (a .psd's name will remain the same, the icon will change and the file will change to some other image).

Here's some info that shouldn't matter, but might.
AGFA Apogee PDF workflow, HP 4000m switch, We are still 95% OS 9.2.2 (customers are dictating our need to switch).

Have you tried using Netatalk instead of Samba for the Red Hat server? Netatalk is the open source version of Appletalk for Linux. I'm sure that there's an RPM out there for Red Hat whichever-version-you're-running. :D

Remember that the inclusion of Samba in OS X is to be able to access Windows shares and to share outto Windows machines. It's not really meant for sharing between Macs. That's what AppleTalk is for. Hope this helps...

One other thing I just thought about.....make sure that you are using the latest version of Samba on the Red Hat server. If you are using something older than what OS X is using, that could be a cause for the problem.
