some say that skype or some versions of it cause the camera not to be detected. is this right? the worked initially then stopped. i looked on the apple site it says to reset the pmc etc. when i do this the camera does not work, though the next day it works for a while. then the problem occurs again. today i haven't been able to get it working. any suggestions. i think it is related to skype, but am not sure. i am running mountain lion on a six month old mac pro retina

What camera? What year is your Mac Pro running what version of OS X?

I have a mac pro retina. i am referring to the built in camera. it has mountain lion X, newest version. about 7 months old.

it is a mysterious issue. by the way i returned it to factory settings yesterday... camera not working... lost to much info... so restored with time machine.

it is mysterious but i believe it needs service... it's like a ghost... it works sometimes. thanks for your interest in helping. i have never seen a specific answer to this question. i know others post about similar problems. i removed skype completely yesterday as well to no avail.

yes, the mac book pro. it has an internal camera. i have reset everything to no avail. it is only frustrating because at times... rarely, the camera works.

Does the camera work when you try the Photobooth app?

If your main problem is with Skype - is your Skype fully updated?

When the camera is detected, check in your System Information (System Report), then the USB tab. Is the camera (Built-in iSight) showing under the USB Hi-Speed bus?

If the camera is not showing on the USB bus, and Photobooth also does not activate the camera, then - absolutely - take your MBPro in for service.
