Mail Message "copmpaction Error"

I have read some of the threads re compaction errors in mac.mail. Ive just started getting this. My G4 (80gb) has generally been slowing down of late, crashing etc. But memory available is 21gb so i shouldnt be suffering from memory starvation yet should I?
Also some threads refer to compaction being an issue of outgoing mail with attachments. except i have none pending and none sent recently that exhibited this problem.
Any thoughts anyone?

You always want to keep 15% free space on your drive.

Try rebuilding your Mailboxes first. Choose Mailbox > Rebuild

If that doesn't help;
Close the Mail.app first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Move the Mail folder to the Desktop.

Launch Mail and the Mail.app will create an entirely new Mail folder and account named folders within at Home > Library > Mail. The account mailboxes will be empty and any user created mailboxes will not be available but this will allow for the Mail.app to function properly.
