mixing hard drives while serving web pages

I have an apache server. My problem is that I want to have a url link to a folder on my external hard drive, not for the whole site, but just for a bunch of files. I have no idea what link I should put in to show those drives. I run mac os x with apache server. I don't know how to get out of the root directory. I've tried aliases with no luck.
ie I want http://mysite/volumes/mystuff/

but it always looks on the drive the server is set on.

where volumes is my external firewire drive
the permissions on the drive should be set correctly, and I have tried aliases, as best I know... Thanks

PS I'm Using webmin for most of my apache config

Thanks!

I am running a server right now hosting several friends sites on my own through ftp. Through my experiences so far, I have found that no matter what you try, all files that are to be accessed by the web server must be in the root directory.

However, to get around this little snag. If you are using save Fetch (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/1126) for instance, to upload or modify your files from a remote location other then your home computers. You can create a separate username and password that can have their Home directory on the second drive. I am running something like this for my *cough* schoolwork ;-) and a separate one for my site administration.

I don't have experience with webmin, but I am sure that with that information, you can modify it to suit the program.

Cheers,
Best of luck.
