Network Ports and their meanings

Hi all. I've been exploring the network utility in Jaguar, and did a port scan on my own machine. Thing is, I don't know what the port numbers mean. I think I've heard that 80 is my web server, but since that's the only service I've turned on, why am I seeing 4 additional open ports?

Anyone know where I can find a simple table explaining the various port numbers?

cat /etc/services in Terminal shows a list of ports

Many thanks, gumse. I did that and noticed one port that wasn't listed. What might that mean? Where can I find an informative primer on such things?
