New vs Old Magsafe adapter question

I just upgraded to a new Macbook Pro. It's an i7. the old was core duo.
The new Magsafe adapter looks different than the old. I have an extra powersupply with magsafe for the old one. I was planning to continue to use it with the new i7. Are they compatible? They are both 85 watts and the metal end plug and pins LOOK the same but I don't want to plug it in and fry something.

Apple does not provide connectors that are physically identical but electrically incompatible. The new MagSafe connector is electrically identical to the old. The change was made to prevent damage to the connector and to make it more difficult to inadvertently disconnect. The obvious physical change notwithstanding, the old and new connectors are completely interchangeable.
