OSX-easy reinstall like OS9?

I'm looking for an easy way wipe my hard drive that my OSX is on without reinstalling the OS -- much like copying an OS9 system and "blessing" the sys folder. I've tried this a couple of ways to no avail.

This is the one thing I haven't been able to figure out with OSX and any suggestions would be most helpful. I just might have to do a UNIX backup and "reinstall" type of thing.

Well, what is your current setup?

The first thing you'll need is an external hard drive, DAT tape drive, or something else that can accomodate a lot of data without being a read-only medium like DVD. The second thing you'll need is Carbon Copy Cloner (look on www.macupdate.com).

Use CCC to copy your system to the external drive or whatever you have. Then you can boot off it, hopefully, or use a bootable CD, and wipe out your hard drive. Then use CCC to copy your system back.

Not going to happen. Even if you were able to backup just your applications, there are 1000's of files installed in OS X, not only by the system, but also by the apps.

Wiping the hard drive implies that you want to completely erase it, which would also erase the OS.

If you're having problems and want to do this to fix, that probably won't help either.

Exactly what and why do you want to do this. Maybe we can help.

I do have a DDS-2 DAT drive and lots of Hard drive space including a 200GB ext ATA drive. The reason, is that currently have my master drive partitioned into 2 parts (OSX and OS9). I'm wanting to move my OS9 sys and apps to its own drive as an internal ATA. This will give me an extra 10GB for OSX and future apps.

I currently have have a few UNIX apps installed and MySQL installed -- setting up my computer as a testing web server. So, If I had to "reinstall" OSX I would have to start all over. Not too big a deal, but If I don't have to.... Like I said, It's just something I haven't been able to "figure" out.

I've tried to copy the entire OSX system library etc from OS9, that way I can pick up all the invisiable files. But when I write everything back to the drive I get the rainbow "ball" spinning forever. The machine knows there's an operating system, but can't find the finder.

The best way to do this would be to use Carbon Copy Cloner, to clone your OS X drive to another drive or partition and make sure you use the option in CCC to make the backup bootable. You need to use CCC to do this. This is only for OS X.

For OS 9, you can just drag the entire OS 9 partition to another drive.

If you have OS 9 on the drive you want to keep it on, but don't want to keep the partitions, FWB (http://www.fwb.com) has a Partition Toolkit that will let you repartition without wiping, but this is only for OS 9.
