I'm speechless at this fucntionality 
(the value for the INSERT was pasted into the terminal window, and automatically converted to escapes!)
Was this introduced in MySQL 4 / Panther, because I don't remember this working in Jaguar with MySQL 3.23
Mind you this unicode functionality seems to take it's sweet time! That query took 0.14s, whereas a SELECT * FROM arabic WHERE words = "hi"; only took 0.01...well worth it in my opinion though (for my applications).
