Quicktime not playing avi files?

Hi all.
When I try to play an avi file through quicktime on my mac, I get a message saying that quicktime is missing components and can not play it. I have done all the latest updates (10.3.3), but can not get certain types of files to play. Anyone got any ideas of what is wrong, or how I can watch these files on my mac?

you are going to need specific codecs to play avi files unfortunately

more common ones are divx, 3vix, xvid etc...

You will want to try VLC

freeware, and plays most of the .avis.

Just get DiVX for Mac OS X from www.divx.com and you might want the Mac xvid component too (it requires DiVX though, so get that first).

Yep, new versions of QuickTime can play those codecs (if installed) without major problems, but you'll want VLC anyway for those files QT can't play even now.
