Quicktime won't recognise but VLC will

Every so often I get a movie that won't play in Quicktime, DivX Doctor won't convert it, but VLC player will play it. Is there some site to find extra plugins for Quicktime? Surely VLC must have something different to be able to play what Qt won't.

The formats are right, mpg, mpeg and avi. Qt icon is on the movie file. I just think Qt is missing something, but what?

That's QuicktimePro 7.0.3 on OSX10.4.3

TIA

If it's an MPEG, chances are that it is either using MPEG2 video or it is actually a TS file (TS files are almost universally misnamed as .mpg; don't ask me why). You can buy Apple's MPEG2 component for the former, but as far as I know there's nothing you can do for the latter.

For AVIs, there are a few options. You can install Divx 5.2.1. That will allow you to open most AVIs in QuickTime without any doctoring. You might also want to try the Divx 6 beta. You'll still encounter some AVIs that QT can't play even with these codecs, and there's really nothing you can do about that. VLC has great error-tolerance, and QuickTime has very little error tolerance. A slightly corrupt file will play fine in VLC, but not in QT, even with the proper codecs.

It might also be that your AVIs are using audio that's not mp3. Try getting the Ogg Vorbis decoder and the AC3 codec
