Random Disconnects

I just got a new iMacG5 and started using it. However I am having alot of problems. I have been connecting to a server via AFP and at random times after it has been connected it disconnects. It has disconnected when I try to open Word documents on it, it disconnects when I am idle. Is there some log that describes what is going on here or am I out of luck.

How are you connected to the server? Is it just showing up with afp or even with samba? Did you setup a new useraccount to see, if it's some user setting that is messed?
