Screen anomally on Imac aio

i am looking at an imac core 2 duo 1.83Ghz running 10.4.7. Half the screen stays white while the other half works. Are these bad pixels or a bad inverter board or something else? See the picture. Also, If I need to replace the screen or inverter board, is that something a moderately accomplished user can do?

Thanks, you may be right.
I'd still like an answer to the difficulty question. A lot of them seem to lose their hard drives after a couple of years or so. How hard is it to crack open the case and fix those things?

The first thing to do is to check external video. Other than that, updating it to 10.4.11 from 10.4.7 would be a good first step just to be sure. And yeah, they are more difficult to take apart than the previous G5 iMacs before those that were user serviceable. I've seen enough of these come to me broken when even other techs have busted them taking them apart.
