Sleep problems

I have the same problem. Tried everything so I'm hoping tiger will be the fix. However I CAN put the baby to sleep manually by going to the apple menu and clicking on "sleep" Given the racket this G4 makes -- this option is a godsend.

My G4 also makes a racket these days. I noticed this increase in noise three months ago after having a new hard disc installed (I upgraded to a bigger disc). However, I am told that a noisy G4 can be due to the build up of dust on one or more fans.

The sleep issue is annoying. I am tempted to do a clean install and see what happens.

I do find it strange that although this is apparently a common problem, no-one seems to have an ansewer for it.

P.S. I have unchecked ALWAYS PUT THE COMPUTER TO SLEEP button in the Sleep Preferences panel. I understand that this is important. However, it has not changed anything.

My G4 made a racket from day 1.

I did a clean install a month ago -- no changes.

I also had consulted a genius at the Apple Store -- she said to get rid of energysaver.plist in my user preferences (didn't work.)

Another suggestion (which I did not try) open up the computer and reset "power management unit" (my notes are vague here -- reset to "off" -- that doesn't makes sense) -- Apparently it's a flat dot -- gray, on the motherboard -- she said to press "ever-so-slightly and ONLY ONCE" then unplug the computer for a while.

Hey! I'm not messing with the motherboard!

The last thing was to reset the p-ram (didn't work.)

Does your G4 go to sleep when you do it manually through the apple icon?

My G4 will not go to sleep automatically. Does anyone have any ideas?

Look in System Preferences > Energy Saver and make sure your sleep-related preferences are set correctly. You also could make sure that your Mac is not set to receive faxes in System Preferences > Print & Fax. And, you may need to delete some preference files. Go Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguraton and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com.apple.AutoWake.plist files. If the latter file is not present, then go username > Library > Preferences and delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file. Reboot after deleting these files.

I wouldn't mess with the motherboard either, not unless I had won the lottery and had nothing to lose.

My G4 does go to sleep if I do it manually.

Since my last post I went into Mail preferences and set the check mail to manual (instead of every five mintues). I left the computer a while and amazingly it went to sleep atomatically (for the first time since my new HD was installed). A blip perhaps? I'll wait and see.
