solving kernel panic - I've done a search already!

awesomer...
OK, so I've done a search and read all the responses for Kernel Panic issues. So this post is an edumacated one. ;)

I get KP's on my 17" pb VERY often - couple times a week, AT LEAST. (since the 1st day I had it...it's been almost 6 months and I feel like I'm on Windows again...)
HARDWARE:
Sometimes it's while I've got my USB hub connected (which has my Logitech trackman marble, and sometime an hp scanjet 6300c), but mostly it happens when my PB is stand-alone.
RAM:
I added a 512mb chip after I got my pb (same day), but it wasn't from apple. (I got it for $100 vs $300 - thinking this may be my downfall...) I haven't tried removing it yet, and seeing if that solves my problem. I'm doing that tonight.

BUT:
as this is a regular occurance, and I'm 90% positive it's not hardware, and IF I find that removing the extra ram doesn't help, I'm asking about steps for REINSTALLING.

I know people have said, reinstalling isn't necessary and won't really work, but this is so often, I'm willing to try at this point (haven't done it yet tho).
What files should I be looking to backup prior to reinstall?
I've got a LaCie 120gb firewire drive, so it's no problem to backup. I've backed-up my user folder obviously.
But I'm not sure of what system files I should backup to re-import later. please help!

again, I'm not quite ready to reinstall yet - gonna try the ram thing first. but after that, reinstall is my last option.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE, EVERYONE!

The problem may well be with drivers for those peripherals of yours... It is common for drivers to Kernel Panic an OS X setup! HP and M$ drivers usually do that just fine :p Try to locate and download the latest drivers for your peripherals before doing anything...

And removing that additional RAM part is a must in the whole process ;)

Let us know what gives! :D

Check out the link in Hulk's signature as well. There are a couple solutions for KP's in there.
