Transferring data from old to new Mac

Bought new G5 iMac, replacing G4 - both running OS X 10.4.10.

G4 has 2 internally-mounted hard drives. One of them is called 'Backup'. The other - the machine's original hard drive - is partitioned; system software is installed on one of the partitions. A total of 3 disk icons therefore appears on the G4 desktop.

With 2 machines connected by Firewire cable, followed instructions of Migration Manager - restart G4 holding down T key. Result: Firewire icon appeared as desired on G4 screen, & icon of disk 'Backup' appeared on iMac screen, but not those of the partitioned 'system' disk.

Opened machine & disconnected 'Backup' disk. Repeated recommended procedure - result, G4 commenced start-up but each time I tried, startup aborted without anything appearing on screen. Reconnecting 'Backup' disk repeated previous results.

Any suggestions for achieving successful transfer of data from the partitioned main disk? Why should disconnecting the auxiliary hard disk interfere with the Firewire transfer process?
