Upgrade fr Tiger to Leopard

I would like to put 10.5 on my emac which is currently 10.4.11 (not intel). In doing so, will I have drop off in performance? Am I trying to force an OS onto a machine that can't handle it? Is this something I can do safely and beneficially? Thank you.
