I have a Power Macintosh 8600 and I want to upgrade it myself. Does anyone have any pointers were I can finds parts such as hard disks, video cards, and processors.

Ah, cool, I too have an 8600! 
Try to search for it on ebay, http://www.ebay.com . To check if the parts works with your machine, try to go to Apple's support page>system configurations or http://ww.apple-history.com. There you can find what kind of RAM it uses and stuff like that. For processor upgrades, I recommend http://www.smalldog.com . They are cheap and fast.
But, the 8600 is really expensive to upgrade, especically RAM (I paid 150$ for 128 MB!), so if you're going to upgrade it much, I'd rather buy an old iMac or something like that (like I have done )
