    IRC question

X-Chat aqua x-chat is a cross-platform irc client, it's free (and the best, might I add) and very customizable. This is a good os x port of it. It will feel weird at first, but once you get used to it and customize it to fit your needs, you'll see it's much better than mirc

    Why doesn't traceroute work?

freaky: but you are still running a firewall on your OS X machine, which prevented you from pinging. and obviously your router doesn't block icmp ports and his does.

    Why doesn't traceroute work?

MLJ_osxcom: that command cannot help you if you are behind a router. freaky was running a firewall on his mac, that's why it worked. You have to figure out how to open icmp ports on your router

    Why doesn't traceroute work?

no problem... though I think the change is not permanent (it will be gone when you reboot), how to do that, I do not know, I have no idea where os x keeps its configuration files for stuff like this

    Why doesn't traceroute work?

just open all ports of type "icmp", which are used for ping, traceroute etc. the command on FreeBSD looks like this: ipfw add 1 allow icmp from any to any it should be the same on os x. must be run as root (sudo would do)
