    Airport/Webserver help please

Sorry, I didn't mention the other manual configuration settings needed: you will need to make sure that your 'router' address (that's your Base Station's IP address, probably 10.0.1.1) and 'domain name server' address are entered in the manual configuration. Subnet mask, too (255.255.255.0)...

    Airport/Webserver help please

Check your Airport Admin config for the range of addresses which the Base Station is handing out via DHCP (e.g., mine is 1-50 on network 10.0.1). Change your Mac server's network config to a manually-assigned IP address which is not in this range (but is on the same network). For my Base...

    Printing from UNIX programs

According to the man page for Print(1), "If file format is inconclusive, Print looks for %!PS or %PDF in the job to determine if the format is postscript or pdf."

    Can't access root account

Chances are you don't need to enable the root account. If you ever need to use root privileges in Terminal, just use 'sudo -s' and give it your admin password. That gets you a root shell to do whatever you need. Then, 'exit' back to your own shell when you're done. Leaving the root account...

    PowerBook Hard Drive Upgrading

I swapped mine for a 20GB Travelstar and have reason to recall reading at the time claims that the Toshibas made less noise. This IBM drive is very noticeable when spinning in my Ti/400.

    9.2.2 Released!

Interesting...as I am running 10.1.1 I tried the Software Update from my 9.2.1 Classic and it said that the software didn't need updating. So, I downloaded and ran the updater (which is a Classic app) under Classic on 10.1.1. It seems to have run OK, though it means business when it 'quits...

so now that @home is shut down what is everyone going to do?

Note to early TCI @Home Mac users (like me): early Mac users were assigned fixed IP addresses, since Apple had not yet implemented the ClientID option for DHCP. If you are one of these users, you'll have to switch TCP/IP to use DHCP (instead of Manual) and dig out your TCI/@Home-assigned...

    tar files corrupting applications

None of the 'old' Unix commands handle resource forks. Not tar, not cp, not cpio, not dd. Even ls -l only displays the size of the data fork, though ls -l (filename)/rsrc will show the size of the resource fork. If you install the Developer Tools, you will get some Apple commands like CpMac...

so now that @home is shut down what is everyone going to do?

Did ATT call you about the migration? I'm in Seattle too, but now without the service. I had a letter from ATT saying that they'd call when they did a migration.

    tar files corrupting applications

The tar command is ignorant of the dual-fork property of some Macintosh files, of which Reader is probably one. The resource fork does not get included in the tar transfer. Go to versiontracker and get the latest hfspax, a tar clone that understands resource forks.

    Microsoft Intellipoint

I've swapped the buttons on my Intellimouse by modifying Apple's mouse driver, which is part of the Darwin open source. This involved: - Installing the developer tools for OS X - Downloading from the Darwin site the IOUSBFamily folder - Opening the IOUSBFamily.pbproj (in Project Builder) -...

    Classic keeps dying

Classic keeps going away, apparently on its own, on my system. It's an irritation, but I don't remember seeing other reports of it. Running OS X 10.1.1 on a PB G4/400. I have a separate partition set up solely for running Classic. I only booted the Mac on this partition twice: once when...

connecting to Linux netatalk shares with OS.

It's working fine for me now on OS X 10.1.1. There were various problems with earlier releases of OS X, but I can't remember if 10.1 or 10.1.1 fixed things so they work for me. I just now tried, and the OS X Finder Connect to Server... window browsed my Appletalk network and everything connected...

HP psc 750 in OS X

OS X drivers are due out in November, according to updates posted on Macintouch/MacFixIt. Meanwhile, I have seen posts that the OS 9 drivers can be used in Classic, though they don't work for my G85 with a JetDirect TCP/IP connection.

The two worst things in OS X EVER

Note though that the 'cp' command won't be sure to copy all the bits of a 'Mac file' (on an HFS+ partition). I think there's another command that will.

    changing IP address (DHCP)???

    1) Many DSL ISPs will let you add a second IP address for a few $$$ extra per month. Then add a hub/router, or switch your roommate's machine to routing instead of connection sharing. or 2) Configure port forwarding on your roommate's machine so that e.g. ftp (port 21) at your DSL IP...

No ports open when I run portscan?

You may need to rejigger your Network prefs. After I installed 10.1, it had 'lost' my AirPort network info and just seemed to 'sit there'. I just had to go in and make sure it was set up right in Network prefs, and it worked. If that doesn't work, you could consider posting details regarding...

    "~" on my PowerBook G4

Scope, you're probably not looking at an Italian keyboard, which the original poster says s/he has. On OS X you'll find the Key Caps app in Applications/Utilities. Just like on OS !X, it will give you the picture of what you can type on your keyboard--hold down the Shift, Option, or...

Airport & HP LaserJet 5MP (AppleTalk)

I don't know of another way--you didn't say what happened when you enabled bridging. If you read Apple's document on "Designing Airport Networks" (downloadable from Apple's Support web site), it only says that, in order to communicate with AppleTalk between AirPort and Ethernet, you have to...
