    Desktop prefs problem

When you google the phrase, you'll find that it's in czech. My guess is that you've somehow gotten your language settings mixed up. Try the Localization prefPane and see if the order in there is mixed up.

Pl. Anyone Help !! Lost a Folder :( Very Urgent !!

There's a discussion here: recover-my-files about recovering files. My short conclusion : I firmly believe that you have a snowman's chance in Hell of recovering those files - unfortunately

    Password protection

it's possible, but you'll have to create a wrapper around Mail - ie a program that takes care of starting Mail. Anyway, if somebody has access to your wife's account on the computer, they can just access the email stored on the computer itself directly in the file system - it's stored in plain...

What you want is the read builtin shell command. help read will give you the synopsis, and the section on read in Advanced Bash-Scripting Guide has lots of great examples.

Moving users folder to another drive or partition

No - since 10.5 niutil has been removed from the system and replaced with dscl; and ditto preservers all of the hfs+ special functionality by default. Yes You can move one or more users -or- all of them. Depending on which of these situations you want to implement, the details will vary...

    View by Folders, then Files?

Finder can't do what you want. You'll have to use a 3rd party program for that - eg Path Finder

@Rayj Did the suggestions about resetting the SMC help you ? Otherwise, if the problem persists, I've got a suggestion for solving the problem using launchd.

    Screwed up partition

OK - DiskUtility will be unable to help you. My personal experience is that iPartition is one of the best programs for messing around with partitions. Try to take a look at it if you don't want to re-format & re-partition the whole HD. Something is really screwy about your partition table and...

    xml files on a mac

nope ... I guess you found the original XML-file somewhere in the filesystem on the WinTel machine. You'll have to find out where the chat log is stored in the filesystem and add it to that folder. Again - I don't know how or where any of these programs store their chat logs.

    xml files on a mac

I'm not that at all well versed with Windows. But if you can copy the file into the chat log, Messenger might be able to pick it up when started again. But we've got Messenger and a program called Adium. The same here - if you can put the file into the chat log these programs might be able...

    xml files on a mac

It's not too complicated - just very complicated :) And a part of a chat isn't good enough - I'ld need to have a complete chat to work with for completely technical reasons. I've attached an example of an XSL to give you an example of what I'ld have to create.

    Screwed up partition

Q : Have you lost any information in the process ? Or do you have a backup of all your data ? When you mess up a partition process, really the best thing to do is backup all your data to external HD (which you ought to have done before the re-partitioning) boot from a secondary media like CD...

    xml files on a mac

What do you really expect to get as the result ? If you've only got the XML file from the msn chat you'll not be able to re-create the look from messenger. Only having the XML file means you'll only be able to re-format the XML file to make it more humanly readable. In order to fully...

    Hosts file not being read/understood

If you 'just' want to hinder some of your application from phoning home, you are way better off using Little Snitch instead of the un-reliable and hard-to-use hosts file.

    xml files on a mac

BBEdit is quite a complicated beast with a lot of functionality, but it's the only program I'm aware of that's able to reflow a document with XML data. Even having used it since Mac OS 8 was all the rage, I still haven't used every option available. Do download it and try i out. You'll have to...

    xml files on a mac

I agree with midijeep - XML is raw data. The purpose of XML, HTML and SGML is to function as meta-formats that describe the data. You''ll always want to do something with this data on the receiving end. All of these formats are in clear-text and thus human-readable. You can actually print it...

    Format for DVD players

Toast is the program for converting and burning DVDs on a Mac. I don't know what kind of formats the program takes as input, but if .avi isn't supported, you can use MPEG streamclip to convert your .avi to a format that Toast can handle - but do make sure to read the requirements section for...

    xml files on a mac

M$ has a long history of embrace - extend - own in their relationship with the standards. So too with XML. Eg. in IE6 M$ introduced support for IE6 to be able to handle raw XML files. But they implemented a draft version of the XML standard and never updated it to the final version, thus leading...
