    portable instalations?

a *dmg is a kind of disk drive in software. You should be able to just copy it to the flashdrive on your Windows machine Then just insert the flashdrive in the Mac and double-click on the *dmg. That should open the *dmg and mount it as a separate drive. You'll be able to run programs directly...

Upgrading to Postfix-144 on OS 10.3.9 server?

I've posted a thread on upgrading Postfix on the client, but it applies to the server as well. If you want to replace the Apple version completely just drop the -DDEF parameters ;; and if you don't want MySQL support you can just drop the whole 'make -f ...' section...

    LaCie 250GB not mounting

OK - then it's some kind of hardware problem. Three possibilites 1) the firewire port has burned out 2) the controller board has burned out 3) the harddisk itself is toast 1) and 2) are just bad luck, but you can easily salvage your data by moving the harddisk itself to another cabinet 3) is...

    Can't change hostname

crashoveride: you can't change the hostname that way unless you are the super-user; that means you'll have to be logged in as an administrator and prefix the command with 'sudo' ;; and the -s option has no place in the command when changing the hostname as it's only for formatting output...

    Up-dating the System?

You can be glad that you're running Mac OS X ;; Ignoring updates is the sure way to hell on a windows system, but luckily for you there's no working exploits for Mac OS X. There's a reason - a very good reason - for Apple to have made the Software Update default to look for and prompt for...

    LaCie 250GB not mounting

I think you've messed things up when you tried mounting it on XP. My bet is that the drive has been formatted as a mac drive. XP is un-able to do anything constructively with that, and very possibly has destroyed some information about the drive format. You'll have to try a disk repair program.

    tiger remove & replace

Unfortunately, there's no "roll-back" provisions in Mac OS X. You'll have to take a complete backup of your system before updating in order to do a roll-back. That's one reason why I'm keeping Mac OS X on one partition, the user folders on another, and all programs not from Apple on a third...

    Browser specific style sheets

That link gives a lot of information about how to "cheat" on the client side. On the server side you'll have to set up a php/perl/python script that analyses the HTTP headers - specifically the User-agent string - and sends the correct stylesheet based upon that analysis.

    firewall for mac?

A basic router is in no way providing a firewall. And routers come in two flavours: with and without NAT. Those with NAT are usually just masking the LAN from the WWW which is no substirute for a proper firewall which is capable of so much more. Having said that, then NAT is actually a good...
