Mac OS X 10.3.9 Update: Top or Flop?

I wouldn't think so. 10.4 is a completely new operating system, not just an update from 10.3. Frankly, I'm planning to do an archive and install, not even keeping my users and settings when I install 10.4. Bit of work to get back up and running, but considering that my home directory contains...

Corrupt Java installation fix for 10.3.9

Simpler option: download and reinstall the last security update from http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty1.pl/product=05426&platform=osx&method=sa/SecUpd2005-002Pan.dmg No need to edit any files. Or, if you prefer, there was a utility released by a third party today that claims to...

Is there a 10.3.9 update update yet?

hmmm, Good point. Perhaps when you install the old Java update any files the 10.3.9 installer did install are replaced with the ones from the older update? Or perhaps they're even the same version, but when the 10.3.9 installer tried to overwrite the files, it just ends up corrupting them since...

Is there a 10.3.9 update update yet?

From the reports I've read, it would appear to me that the updater is unable to replace certain components during install due to them being in use by any open applications that use Java. The reports that I've seen generally say that the problem has not occurred if all such applications are quit...

need help - how do I open a SECURE SHELL?

from a terminal window: ssh user@ip.address that will open the secure shell connection. It will then ask for a password. It may also ask if you want to add the address to the list of known hosts, in which case say yes. Once the password is entered, you are logged into the system, and where you...

    Blackbox GUI on X11?

Are you trying to install it manually or through fink? if manually, try Fink. Often a source file needs to be patched to get it to compile/operate properly in OS X, and fink takes care of this. Although to be honest, I have seen errors like what you are getting even when using Fink, and have...

    10.3.9 has broken my mail.app

Nope. No problems here either. And I have run repair permissions exactly once since I bought the computer two and a half years ago, so it's not that :)

    Letting em' Run

About the only time I ever restart my computer is if something goes funny and I cant find some other explanation, or when the OS is updated. And I have the folding@home client installed, so my processor is always maxed out. Haven't seen any problems yet :)

    Blackbox GUI on X11?

You need to install Xcode. It should have come on a separate CD with your OS CD's, or it can be downloaded from developer.apple.com

:p Luckily the cabin is pressurized to an effective altitude of no more than 10,000 feet, so you iPod should still work :)

    Installing Tiger?

I can't say anything to whether you have a DVD drive or not, but regardless, it is my understanding that you will, in fact, be able to install from the external. I seem to recall seeing several other threads around here asking that about other computers, and the answer was it should work...

    Developer Tools?

Yes and no. He stated in the original post that he had run the "Developer Tools" installer. This would be where the Developer folder came from. In a sense you could say he has Xcode installed, as the "Developer Tools" are basically the same thing, although significantly older. However, the...

    Developer Tools?

Actually, Xcode 1.5 is exactly what you need. They changed the name from "Developer Tools" to "Xcode" with the release of 10.3, if I recall correctly. And the developer tools should have been installed at the root level of your hard drive, if the install worked.

HP tries to support a mac like a PC.

yeah. Don't get me started about HP tech support. When I had a problem with their scanner driver not working as it was supposed to (trying to scan to PDF with the skip preview window option selected wasn't working), it took me three tries before they even understood the problem - and I wasn't...

    Missing processor power

So, do you want to ship that pinkie by USPS or FedEx? :P Actually, that has been the issue multiple times in the past. Not this time, unfortunately. As I mentioned, the list is sorted by processor usage. Those applications using the most will be displayed at the top of the list, and anything not...

    Missing processor power

For some reason today my processor has been continually pegged at 100% usage, but I cant figure out where that processing time is going. I have attached the output from top, sorted by processor usage. As you can see, the total processor usage from listed processes adds up to only about 20%, and...
