Video CD does not play on Powerbook

I was recently *ahem* educated on this very topic in this thread .. :) The short answer is, yes, you can, but you need additional software (links are in the article).

    What is Rendezvous??

That's not exactly right. zeroconf/Rendezvous is very IP-dependent. It's really additional protocols that allow for a non-central way of discovering machines and services. This is done largely using multicast, which is, itself, IP dependent. It's important that it be IP, so that it can coexist...

CoolPix Camera - To Buy or Not?

FWIW, I used to have a CoolPix950. That was a great camera. Nice optics, very good images. I'd definitely recommend the Nikons (even if you have to bust your budget by a little). You may want to go with 3Mpix over 2, just because although you may not intend to print now, the extra rez will be...

    Whooopieeee - a glorified iBook

What do I think? I think the G3 is dead. I think it's high time for another great small PowerBook (I had a 2400 @ one time - very cool). I think that the iBook will disappear within 2 years. I think that's not a bad thing. I think that the spot in the product matrix that the iBook holds will be...

no ethernet link & ifconfig unresponsive

'cos that's the way it is... ;) Seriously, I think the assumption (on the part of the router manufacturer's) is that the router will be plugged into a hub, so the the port is wired to be a straight-through device, so you can use any commonly-availiable straight-cable and connect it to any...

    OS X and File Types

Tar is famous for stripping the resource fork out of some applications, rendering them useless. I believe that this would apply primarily to Classic and Carbon apps, but could easily apply to any of them. This, in my experience is less of a problem with data files - if they have an...

no ethernet link & ifconfig unresponsive

The TiBook (and the iBooks, too, BTW) will autonegotiate the crossover state (this is not the same as duplex) of the ethernet port based on the cable in use and the uplink style of the other device (DSL modem, computer, hub, whatever). But I don't believe that the G4/450's ethernet port does...

    OS X and File Types

The duality is real.. there's still the resource forks in (files) that'll get used if it exists, but if not (like .tar.gz or .zip file, for instance), the extension is used. r4bid is right, the finder get info thing usually works, but not always.. I think the problem is that we're still very...

    advice on digital recorder

Make sure that if you decide to try it, you buy from a place that will take it back if it doesn't work. I'm guessing that it won't -- the description on Sony's site suggests that some sort of conversion is going on to get it to produce the .wav files: I don't like the sound of LPEC CODEC...

    compiling hping2-rc2 on 10.2.3

Here's what I did to make it work... Looking at the code in getifname.c, it looks like there's no specific Darwin directives, so the trick is to get getifname.c to think that we're on a *BSD (given that so much of Darwin behaves like *BSD). Turns out that's really easy to do. One like of code...

    can't play vcd's in os x?

Well... I stand corrected. After your post, I went back and poked at the options available in VLC a bit more. Turns out the trick (if you can call it that) is to do an 'Open Disc' - not 'Open File'. Duh.. :) However, VLC does seem to have a problem with my Terapin-recorded VCD's - it won't play...

    can't play vcd's in os x?

Well, I'm afraid it's worse than a missing codec or needing just another bit of player software. The real issue is that MacOSX still doesn't have the right bits in the cdrom drivers to deal with whitebook compliant VCDs. This has been covered on the forum before in this thread. I didn't realize...

    Sharing iTunes files via iCommune

Well, looks like Apple's gone and squashed this (for now, at least). From the iCommune website: Can't say I'm terribly surprised, but I am disappointed that Apple would do this....

    working at home

Statistically, there have to be some legit ones out there, but they're not the ones that will pay you "$1000/day using your computer to work from home". From a business management perspective, it just doesn't make much sense to do this. Get a real job. And a hair cut. :D
