    trojan?

1033 is netinfod. I would recommend strongly against disabling it; you may find that your ability to even log into your machine severely hampered. As mentioned, because it's only bound to 127.0.0.1 (localhost), it is not accessable from other systems (by default; there's certainly ways to make...

Quartz Extreme with ATI Rage 128

Even if it's AGP, QE requires Radeon for the ATI's, according to Apple.

    Removing "kext" kernel extensions

Maybe not 10.2.4, but just 10.2.x... It doesn't work on my 10.2.3 machine either. The command under 10.2.? is kextstat. I'm not so sure that it's not loading up stuff that it doesn't need, though: 45 0 0x1dd80000 0x6000 0x5000 com.apple.iokit.SCSITaskUserClient (1.2.3) <38 36...

    From PC to MAC

Flashing the ATI card from PC to Mac is certainly possible. Here's something Google turned up: http://atimacunderground.freeservers.com/index.html I know I've see other mentions of doing this elsewhere, but I'm struggling to find them @ the moment. I'll edit this post, or add to the thread if I...

Your screen resolution - and why

Oh yes, it can. Lots of people can notice the difference between 60Hz and 75Hz. I certainly can. If I try to run with 60Hz for more than 5 or 10 minutes, I start to get migraine-like symptoms - headache, nausea, etc.. The difference is certainly visible. If you're the kind that thinks...

    Single Processor G4

I've always worked with the notion that you should buy the best machine you can afford. With the sorts of things that you mention you're planning to do, a dual-proc machine will certainly make a difference vs. a single-proc machine. It will also have a much longer lifespan even though it might...

    Fighting new Junkmail tactics?

I think the only difference between training mode and Automatic is Mail's handling of the messages. If you're vigilant about telling Mail that a particular message is Junk (and what's Not Junk), it will take that into account with future messages. I only have 1 or 2 custom filters besides the...

what ever happened to this Apple device?

I first thought of Pippin when I read that. I actually have one of the prototypes and a little of the software that was going to go with it. I've even got the keyboard (with Japanese characters) for it. It was pretty clear from the first time I played with it why it never made it to market. It...

    IrDA-USB-Bridge

The last I recall is that there is no support for IrDA in X, even with systems that have it built-in. I could be wrong here, so someone else will have to correct me here. That said, if X is going to recognize it, you should see an option in HotSync Manager's Connection Settings: There would...

    Palm Desktop and syncing strategies

The file formats are different between Windows and Mac. On Mac, the data is stored in "User Data" in the user's folder, whereas on Windows, it's broken out into things like 'Datebook.dat' and 'address.dat', etc. You'll have to sync the Palm with the Mac (with all that entails). I wouldn't be...

Newbie Question: Using modprobe and a SCSI controller

It should work in either rc1.d or rc3.d. Of these two, I'd go with rc3.d. But, really, I think /etc/rc.d/rc.local would be the best place to put these commands. rc.local is the last thing called during startup, after all the other rcx.d scripts. If you choose to stick with rc3.d... How are you...

Advanced file share question? (for Mac/PC experts!)

It wouldn't have really surprised me if it were true, but I rather think that there's something wrong with Phil has the xp perms set up for the shared folders. I just tried this from my iBook (10.2.4) to my XP machine, and it absolutely rejects me unless I've provided a valid password. I tested...

    Hardware firewall neccessary?

Not sure I agree with you there... I think a hardware-based firewall/NAT is a much better solution than a software-based one, especially the built-in one on X. First, a separate firewall/NAT will greatly obscure your machine from the internet, and may reduce the damage your machine may...

Newbie Question: Using modprobe and a SCSI controller

Getting it to come up at boot time involves adding a line for the driver in /etc/modules.conf. I'm a little sketchy about exactly how to determine the right alias name to use, though. I'm actually fighting this with my soundcard, which works if I manually start it, but not with the entry in...

    X11 for OSX 10.1

I don't think such a thing exists... Apple's X11 is dependent on features that only exist in 10.2. As an alternative you could go with XDarwin. This is what I used before Apple released theirs, and it works very well. The performance isn't quite as good as Apple's X11, but it's very usable.
