That's happened to me in IE, both in OSX (up to 10.1.5) and OS9. I have to either windowshade it, or just scroll to "clear" it.

I don't really need to see it update so often, so I use "top -s 5" (which sets it to update every 5 seconds), it brings it down to about 2%.

I'd love to see gkrellm for OSX.
