Configure dual ethernet ports on MacPro

In short: 1. Set up your first port for DHCP, hook up the cable modem and try if you can connect to the internet from the Mac 2. Enable Internet sharing on your MacPro for the interface that is connected to the modem. 3. Set up a private IP network in the range 192.168.X.nn for the second...

Sharing Itunes library using boot camp?

I wish you were right! In preferences, I can move the folder "iTunes Music" but not the rest of it. I've just found a trick in the help: Start iTunes with the Alt key pressed. The you can then start it with a different iTunes library. But beware: The incompatibilities between Windows and Mac OS...

    wireless g, external disk, 2Mbit/s

My experience may be a bit older. Windows is rarely able to use the full GB bandwith, because its TCP/IP implementation isn't "perfect". I'll check the transfer rate between my iMac and my Macbook with ftp. Both habe GB ports and the Dell switch shouldn't be a bottleneck. I'll keep you posted.

Getting your tunes back after a crash?

As a happy iTunes customer, I make a very simple backup of my tunes: I burn them to Audio-CD, print a booklet and put the CD on the shelf in my living room. You can, of course, copy the iTunes library (~/Music/iTunes) to any backup device of your choice. If you change your computer, don't...

Sharing Itunes library using boot camp?

I tried to it under Parallels and it is "kind of" possible. Two problems: 1) iTunes assumes its database files in a fiolder named "iTunes" under your default music folder. You cannot point iTunes to a different directory, just the media files can be put outside the default path which is "<Music...

    wireless g, external disk, 2Mbit/s

It is even more than that: You can expect a factor of 10 because you have to take all the framing on the bit and the various packet levels (Ethernet, IP, TCP) into account. 1MB/s over a 10Mbit/s ethernet is a good value. With Gigabit ethernet, the theoretical limit is at about 100 MB/s. You need...

Wireless MSN Trouble Belkin f5d76324 (v5)

Parallels and VMWare are competing commercial products that emulate a complete PC inside your Intel powered Mac. You can (and need to) install a Windows or other operating system license in the virtual machine. Done that, you can run almost any software written for the respective system on your...

    Different VPN Question

If you want to go the Windows way, you can do it in a virtual machine. Just run the VPN client in Parallels. I'm not aware, that the Mac client has the same feature. Can you tell us more obout which VPN software you are using?

Wireless MSN Trouble Belkin f5d76324 (v5)

You WILL need NAT because it maps your local IP adresses to the Internet IP you get from the provider. So don't touch it! Since I don't have MSN, I can't help much further. Is it probably a matter of the MSN client software version? Have you tried the Windows app under Parallels or VMWare?

    basic wireless setup on Mac

To avoid cabling you can look for "power line ethernet". You will get a package of two devices which plug into a wall socket and provide an ethernet port. It is not the speediest solution but still better than WLAN in most cases.

    Slow wireless connection

Several possible reasons come in to my mind: 1. The wireless connection is bad beause there is some obstacle in the way or some other device is using the same frequencies: Change the WLAN channel in your router. 2. The Airport in your Mac is defective. You can try it by building up a...

    Ethernet port not working

If you bought it new from a dealer, even via eBay, it should be covered by some sort of warranty. Here in Germany, the dealer is responsible in any case, at least if he is a professional dealer and not a private seller. You should as well ask Apple support if they are willing to help you out.

Wireless MSN Trouble Belkin f5d76324 (v5)

Have you tried to disable the firewall? (NAT needs to be enabled of course!) I don't know which ports are used by MSN. They have to be enabled in the firewall to get connected. Does MSN work, if you use the wireless rout over an ethernet cable? (It should have an internal hub or at least a...

    10.4 DNS Resolutions Woes

Sometimes it helps to just add a dot "." at the end of the name. But I suspect that the embedded DNS uses some domainname and broadcasts this name to the DHCP clients if they are prepared to accept the information. Can you check what your Windows or Linux clients send to the DNS when they...

Bootcamp, VM Fusion, Linux, Partitioning, and other tricks

Parallels does the job for me. I've multiple Windows VMs, some migrated from older Virtual PC disks. (Beware! Uninstall any VPC additions before the migration!). With 4GB RAM in my Mac, the VMs run fast enough. I don't do multimedia stuff in the VMs, so performance isn't an issue. Parallels...
