Slow wireless connection

I have a wireless connection from my Mac desktop (os10.4.11) to a Lynksis wireless router (wrt54g) but the connection is very slow. Also connected to the router is a Windows xp laptop that works fine. The router firmware has recently been upgraded and reconfigured after installing a new modem NetCom ND1. Mac diagnostics says everything is okay. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Several possible reasons come in to my mind:

1. The wireless connection is bad beause there is some obstacle in the way or some other device is using the same frequencies: Change the WLAN channel in your router.

2. The Airport in your Mac is defective. You can try it by building up a (temporary) peer to peer network with your XP box and exchange some large files to test it.

3. You have some strange configuration problem and the IP packets aren't directly routed via the Airport but through some other (non working) port before a retry is made which goes the correct way. Try the traceroute command in the shell to check that out.

It is always a good idea to check the Console logs for any error messages.
