    Another cnet article bashing apple

There are alot of clusters on the list, but there are alot of non-clustered boxes, for instance the SGI Origin 3000 can have up to 1,000 processors in a shared emory environment. 30 of the top 500 are Origin 3000's. Of the top 500, 165 are MPP servers (distributed memory multiprocessors). 127...

    scsi on a G5

Other World Computer (http://www.macsales.com) is a very reputable place, probably the most reputable when it comes to purchasing performance upgrades for Macs. I have purchased both my GigaDesign G4/800 CPU upgrade as well as an ATI Rage 128 Pro PCI card from them and they've been great to deal...

    airport-like router with modem?

There are other options, but the Airport is probably the cheapest that does both wifi and dialup. There isn't a very large market for dialup router type devices, so their cost is higher. Brian

Good public folder to save temp logs?

The C function is mkdir. :) Half the time if you can't figure out the name of a C call, but know the unix command to do it, it's probably the same name as the unix command :) Brian

Not for corporations. You can buy a 100 processor Sun box, that is one single server, running one single OS image, with one single shared memory segment. You can take any multithreaded application and it will run using as many processors as threads that the application will run, using as much...

    2004 Contributions - It Begins!

Don't forget added cost of the equipment you'd need if you weren't co-located. :) In addition to paying for the montly bandwidth of 1.5Mbs peak for a DSL line (you could have a peak much larger then that at a colo) you'd have the following extra charges: * Power (cost of power, plus cost...

    Righthanded mouse - legal?

If we can sue companies for making a righty only mouse, can we also sue companies that make a lefty only mouse? What about sueing a company for not making a mouse to use with your foot for people who have no arms? :) Now, I can't use any of these damn ergonomic mice, they don't fit my hand. I...

The article is right on the money. Most supercomputers are not custom designs such as the top 10, the other 490 on the list are standard models sold by IBM/Sun/HP/Cray/SGI. Apple will not be offering a $2.6M computer off the shelf. You can go to http://store.sun.com and order a $2.6M computer...

    Cray on eBay

The whole problem with these computers is operating environment. Most homes don't have the power to power them (most use 3 phase power), let alone the cooling environment for them. And, even if they did have the power, the cost just to keep it running and cool is huge. Brian

    External monitor question.

The problem is, in mirroring mode, it is just that, a mirror of what the main screen is. Because the main screen is not in the same ratio as the external monitor, it cannot mirror to the full screen, which is why you have the black bars at the top and the bottom. It is doing the same pixel...

Not 100% happy with iMac purchase now

It's a tad bit late to try to exchange them now, if the 20" iMac came out the day after you bought your 17", that was 8 weeks ago. Now if you tried the day after you bought it it would have worked. Brian

    Video Card Compatible?

You mean S-Video. SVHS and S-Video are two completely seperate things. SVHS is SuperVHS which is an enchanced VHS system developed by Panasonic. S-Video is a type of connection, also called Y/C, the Y part is the black and white video signal, the C part is the color information. Many...
