    my first OSX crash

it happened to me again today. this time, i was not transferring a huge amount of data, rather, i was un-tarring a rather large tar file, on my firewire drive. the firewire drive stopped responding, and iTunes, the one window of Terminal.app with the tar process, and Finder.app all ceased to...

    three fstabs? which is which?

besides fstab, OSX will also probe busses and adds them dynamically. i believe that the software that controls this is autodiskmount, which unfortunately doesn t seem to have any gonfigurability: everything goes in /Volumes the answer to your question is yes, everything will work normally...

    What defragger do you use?

i thought i would point out that drive 10 now has optimization. presumable it uses the same code from techtool pro. i think i will buy it now.... Ed, i wonder what your opinion is about what is the best disk repair utility. i have hosed a big firewire backup drive, and i can t get techtool...

    Bash prompt and /etc/profile

i believe that if you 'su -' instead of just 'su', you get the environment proper to the user you are suing to, i.e. PATH and HOME and such. if you just 'su' you only get UID of the user (in this case root) if you want to run an app as root from the terminal, i assume you were doing this...

    three fstabs? which is which?

i believe that those are example fstab files, just for reference. /etc/fstab is the one you are looking for. if it is not already there, create one.

    Administrator password FRUSTRATION

this is not a security hole. If someone is allowed to change your boot disk, then that person can have total read write access to your other disks. this situation is the same for every OS, UNIX and windows.

    HP Scanjet software....

sounds like a kernel panic. yeah, thats how OSX will do its UNIX crash. it feels somehow more frustrating and more serious-looking than an old fashioned OS9 crash. well i guess we will just have to wait. you might give VueScan a try. you can find it on versiontracker. i ve also heard...

    Office in Use

i found those port numbers on this message board. it was easy for me to find because i ve seen this discussed before and knew what keywords to search by. i was gonna just post the URL to the thread, but it was really long, with a lot of flase speculation about MS spyware, so i didn t. so...

    Office in Use

yeah, Office will check on the LAN for other instances running with the same serial number. try something like this: sudo ipfw add 0 deny udp from any to any 2222 sudo ipfw add 0 deny tcp from any to any 3464 it will block the ports that office uses, so that it cannot communicate on...

How do I set up a DNS server?

krokodilen: i sometimes wonder what exactly the differences between OSX client and OSX server. OSX server has a GUI frontend to setting up NI domains, and now im learning that it has GUI frontend to bind, but for the most part, the underlying software is identical? tk4two1: after you...

How do I set up a DNS server?

au contraire. bind is installed by default on OSX client, although there is no default configuration (i.e. there is no /etc/named.conf). but you don t have to download/install. just create a configuration file.

How do I set up a DNS server?

well setting up a name server means just having the correct config files, and then run /usr/sbin/named. setting up custom zone files might be a little complicated for your needs, however. you don t really need to have a name server just to translate hostnames to IPs. /etc/hosts or NetInfos...

    Closing tabs in Navigator

so, in previous versions, it was command - Y to close a tab, and command - w to close the window, right? so these commands are new to chimera 0.4? you know, i kind of preferred te previous way, and ill bet it is more compliant with apple interface guidelines. what are your opinions?

Sharing Folders in MAC OS X.2 (JAGUAR)

i believe that OSX only likes to share out home directories. you can share out additional volumes or directories via AFP by adding an entry to mounts, in NetInfo, but there is no easy way to add a new shared folder from any system preferences. i expect that samba, even if apple has integrated...

    Adding a printer using terminal

this article has a description of adding a command line printer. it mostly just tells you to add a line to /etc/printcap. check man printcap for details about formats.
