    Disable transperacy in OS X?

There is a utility program to do that, and it will only make a difference on a G3 with an older video card. It will also make OS X look ugly. I cannot remember the name of it, and it will remove drop shadows. I ran it on my cube and noticed no apparent speed increase. Check at versiontracker.com

MacOS X won't switch off iMac Monitor

Delete this file in the Library/Preferences folder of your hard drive. com.apple.PowerManagement.plist Deleting it solved a problem I had with X and dimming my monitor and with spinning down the hard drive.

iDisk, the horror and the pain...

Most of the time it is unusable to me because it is so slow. You are not alone.

    slow start-up, install...

The slow start-up in OS X is not at all normal. My cube boots X as fast as it does 9. However, when it cannot connect to a DNS or DHCP server upon boot, you can expect the long delays. I had this problem when the DNS servers were offline. Everything took forever, as it was trying to talk to...

    Ethernet?

I could not get the auto sensing to work in OS X when not using a crossover cable. I have had it work in OS 9 with only the newest Macs. Cybergoober has the best advice with manually assigning IP connections in the 10.0.0.x range. Get a switch, not a hub, when you do purchase one.

    X.1.3

Andy, I was unable to set my ftp site for anonymous upload, so I will need to upload it there, so if you can send me the file, I can post it.

    X.1.3

I have a site that I could post to, but need to know the size. I wouldn't want everyone in the world dl'ng it though.

Cannot get to title bar of iPhoto window

I changed screen resolution and the same thing happened to me. I had to do as kenny suggested, delete the prefs file to get it back. Not too smart to not check the screen area size and position of a window, even I do that in my programs :)

    Home network router Q

That would be WINS for our PeeCee brethren. AppleTalk will broadcast machine names now in OSX 10.1 and be discovered in the Chooser or Connect to Server in X. DNS does not hand out machine names, but will only resolve domain names to an IP address. Dynamic DNS in Win2k or XP servers will...

    Home network router Q

kenny, I have never had any problems with DNS with the LinkSys using it on cable or DSL, both static or DHCP. I have made an entry for the DNS servers in the router configuration, even though it uses DHCP. The DNS servers addresses never change. My Mac OSX shares do show in the Chooser of a Mac...

gNAT - software base station OK but no DNS ?

Try using nslookup in terminal. You should see something like this : [localhost:~] mactech% nslookup Default Server: alpha.buf.adelphia.net Address: 24.48.33.2 That is the DNS server assigned by my router using DHCP. Let's start with that and see what is returned.

    Home network router Q

I use a LinkSys 4 port router/switch to connect all of my Macs together in a LAN and share my cable connection to the internet. The 100mb switch works quite well and I use AFP over IP between the Macs. The router will not let the AppleTalk leak out unless you program it too and can act as a...

    Excessively large hardware address..

Who uses AppleTalk anymore, hehe. NetMonitor will run in the menu bar and give a scrolling graphic of your connection, kind of like the CPU monitor will. iTunes can recover from packet loss and you would never know. The visual feed back NetMonitor gives is great. Do you open Console to look...

    Excessively large hardware address..

I repeated that netstat several times and that 'strange' # is always the same. What are you using to connect your Mac together and does it route to the internet? My switch/router has a DHCP server in it. I will try this from a couple of linux boxes we use as web servers and see what I get. Do...

    Excessively large hardware address..

    I just did the netstat -i and got pretty much the same thing. [localhost:~] mactech% netstat -i Name Mtu Network Address Ipkts Ierrs Opkts Oerrs Coll lo0 16384 <Link> 26986 0 26986 0 0 lo0 16384 127 localhost...

    Some tips about CPU utilization

There is a very noticeable degradation in other application's performance when Netscape 6.x is running in the background and you simply click and hold the mouse down. It still is using too much CPU time for being in the background.

    insane processor usage.

Mozilla hogs CPU time when the mouse is depressed when it is not the front active app. This causes everything else to go slower if you click and hold the mouse down. If they fixed this one small problem, Mozilla would rock, for me. It certainly is much faster than other browsers in X except for...
