Does Memory Management Suck or What?

This is not an issue. Memory is pulled off the inactive list based on on a least recently used algorithm. This is a good thing, not a bad thing. http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Performance/Conceptual/ManagingMemory/Articles/AboutMemory.html

    Java and Non-Apple L&F

I've got an application that had no problem with JMenuBar, popup menus, etc. with either the Metal L&F or the Apple L&F. I'm guessing you are doing something unique that isn't quite the norm, but it's hard to tell from just the stack trace. :)

    Desktop sharing?

WebEx does this, and it works quite well for desktop/application sharing. Unfortunately it is a pay-for-use service.

How many Mac's have you had in your lifetime? (Home only + parent's machines)

I've had 4 total. I bought my first right when OS X came out, a Blueberry G3 iMac. That didn't last long (too slow). A year ago I bought an 12" iBook G4, and a few months ago I bought a Mac mini and then a 17" PowerBook G4. More to follow, I hope!

    Diagram and Project Mgmt Software

In the OS X universe, what packages are equivalent to Micorsoft Visio and Microsoft Project? I'm not necessarily looking for something that is compatible, but packages that can be used for the same purporses...

    World of Warcraft Friday Release!!!

Interesting. I just got my Powerbook 17" today with the Radeon 9700 w/ 128MB VRAM and it plays quite nice. It performs with about the same frame rate as the 2.4GHz Athlon I have with a Radeon 9600 Pro. The 12" PowerBook only has a GeForce2Go 5200 or something similar, I think?

Has anyone build FireFox from source?

I'm trying to gather compile time statistics on various Mac hardware. The Macs I've had access to so far have both done it around ~90 minutes, but of course they have slow 4200 laptop drives, so I would expect that to be a worst case situation.

    World of Warcraft Friday Release!!!

There was a client update that improved the Mac client a little bit. It runs really slow on my Mac hardware, though, so I didn't really see an improvement. From what I've read, it's pretty close performance wise to the PC versions based on the video card alone. I'd really recommend a 9600 Pro or...

    Programming in Java on Mac

Eclipse is very good, and is usually the IDE I suggest for people who want a free one. I use IntelliJ IDEA from http://www.jetbrains.com/ for my Java development. I still find the G4 Macs too slow for most Java stuff. My 1GHz iBook was just too slow for any of the Java editors to be useful...

Apple drops BTO Mac mini prices

Apple has a refund policy if they drop any prices within 10 days of your order shipping. It isn't automatic, though. I had to call them up and they were helpful, but it took a little time to get worked out. But, I saved about $40! :) From what I read on slashdot, none of the Mac minis shipped...

AppleInsider in-depth look at Mac mini

It looks sort of like a USB or FireWire connector, and it seems to have 10 pins. I took some pictures but they're all blurry, so use your imagination. :) Here is an older pic I took when I got the Mac last week; you can see the socket for the power plug on the far left of the Mac...

FedEx just dropped off my Mac mini

OK, I measured the power consumption directly with a device you can get at Radio Shack called a Kill-a-Watt. You just plug in your appliance of choice and you can watch the power consumption in a variety of different ways. I got the 1.42GHz version, with 512MB RAM, SuperDrive, and AirPort...

FedEx just dropped off my Mac mini

Some notes that people have asked about (don't know if these have been covered already): 1. It does have an external powerbrick. 2. I didn't plug in a USB keyboard and mouse, and it was able to find my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse as part of its initial startup. It was slow to find devices...

FedEx just dropped off my Mac mini

Quite likely. The shipping box is 12"x9"x12", so that would fit in the standard package mailboxes they have.
