    which 'unix' version is darwin using?

    Well in user-space it's FreeBSD. Some if it anyway. The best answer is it's Darwin, the other BSD

    Burn CDs from the terminal?

    hdiutil burn works great for me, but if you want to burn bin/cue files try cdrdao

    Tcl/Tk ???

    Why not just use XDarwin instead? At least then you wouldn't get confused with apps which look, but don't behave like mac apps |-\ Plus it'll actually work.

    Windows emulators for UNIX on the Mac?

    Please don't cross post. Bochs sucks BTW. It can hardly run DOS, nevermind Windows |-\

    Is Drive 10 a good app?

    oh cool, I hope they also replace fsck. What Alsoft should REALLY do is create a new filesystem which combines the advantages of HFS+ and UFS. In other words it would support all HFS+ attributes, FileIDs, b-trees while also having UFS fragmentation management qualities and also softupdates.

    Apple, PLEASE fix this...

    Welcome to the UNIX (aka crappy) way of doing things. In MacOS every app was updated by its signature (creator code). Welcome to UNIX hell, where all files are referenced by paths and are thus as fragile as a URL. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

    Virtual PC on the cheap...

    PS: You can buy the DOS version and install any version of Windows on top. I HIGHLY suggest Win2K since 32bit clean OSs/apps run better in VPC5

    Virtual PC on the cheap...

    Allow me to save you a lot of headaches: VirtualPC 5 (fully updated) is your ONLY sane option for running Windows on OS X! Prior versions either don't run on OS X or they run like crap. Bochs is even worse |-p Personally I boot a PC which runs PCMacLAN (AppleTalk software for Windows)...

    AppleTalk to serial port?

    no If there is a UNIX version of the LocalTalk bridge then it could be ported. If you have an older 68k mac with ethernet, you could use that as a bridge.

    help need on building .mac backup alternative

    I'm not going to use that program until it copies ALL the HFS+ data. That means not only both forks but all attributes. It'll probably be easier to do this via Carbon.

    Best Flavor of Linux for Mac?

    Debian is easier to maintain, although some find it harder to initially install. Failing that, try cherry. Actually you ought to give NetBSD PPC a try. PS: I'm running OS X on my PowerCenter. You could run Darwin too.

    what unix version can I install in my mac os X?

    Considering all Linux-binary-only apps are x86 I would see that as completely pointless.

    I humbly suggest an HFS+ compatible version of rsync

    gcc 3.1 vs 3.2

    Does that include drivers? IOKit uses a C interface for user-space programs, but the drivers are written with C++ interfaces.

    gcc 3.1 vs 3.2

    Please don't compare this to Linux, good grief! Also, please don't talk about rumors. 10.3? pffft, go home rumor-monger! 3.2 adoption will be rapid. That's the current build and all other gcc3+ using distributions are already moving. This is more difficult for Apple and 3rd parties. Who...

    gcc 3.1 vs 3.2

    Apparently C++ libs compiled with gcc 3.1 aren't compatible with 3.2 even though the 3.1 API was supposed to be 'stable' (my ass). How is Apple going to manage their situation? 10.2 is built with 3.1 and the dev tools are also based on 3.1. Either Apple will have to switch soon or they will...

    using tar to Backup applications

    I MEANT to say I don't know if either OS supports them. I know for a fact they don't use them. In other words if you create a custom fork the Finder may not preserve it when copying files. Anyway, screw filesystems. Nothing but a pain |-p

    using tar to Backup applications

    HFS+ has attributes of which finder flags are a part of. My primary machine doed so I don't have my bookmarks immediately handy but there is a technote on HFS Plus. The fork stream doesn't contain any of this data. The resource fork only preserves resource fork data like a file's custom...

    using tar to Backup applications

    This isn't surprising given UNIX originally didn't have flags. PS: I don't think the immutable flag is in the fork, I think it's one of the Finder flags. I could be wrong, but then I really don't care since the behavior of a locked file or folder has changed in OS X to something which is...
