Thanks. Manually downloaded and installed combo update PPC 10.4.10. No change after the reboot, System Prefences is still in its stunted form, and TextEdit is still far too shy. Any other ideas? :)

It doesn't have 100% of all file extensions listed, but a good site to find out about file extensions is Filext.com. Has solved a few obscure or other OS specific queries I had. May come in handy for future reference. :)
