    Shell Script Questions

Here are a few of my questions about shell scripts. I'm not sure if this is the right section, but the Scripting section seemed more like a collection. 1. How do I have my shell script check for a -[letter]? For examle, if I want to have my shell script echo either yes or no: Input...

There is no "iPod Software Updates" folder, either. The only folder there is "iTunes Plug-ins".

    Is jailbreaking legal?

Supposedly, the firmware file is supposed to be in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates. I looked, and the only folder in "iTunes" is "iTunes Plug-ins". Where is the 3.0 firmware file? I bought it from iTunes, and installed it on my iPod. Where are the firmware files? One thing to note is...

How do I format my hard drive?

Can someone please tell me the steps to formatting my hard drive with Disk Utility? Also, I have two questions: 1. Do I have to format my drive from the Disk Utility on the Mac OS X Install disk or the one stored on my computer? 2. Will I have to reinstall Mac OS X after formatting it...

How do I delete all my deleted files?

Are you saying that if I write zeros over free space (which leaves me with 0GB left) and repair the disk, those deleted files will be completely gone and I will have the space back on my disk?

How do I delete all my deleted files?

I did that, but when I clicked "Secure Empty Trash", it said it only deleted 3 items. Would it work to clear up space by duplicating a large file a ton (e.g. iPhone SDK DMG) and delete the copies, and secure empty trash?

How do I delete all my deleted files?

The reason why I want to get rid of all those already deleted files is that I want to partition my hard drive. Because I've deleted so many files, many of which "still exist" and have not been written over, Boot Camp says I don't have enough space left on my hard drive. Wouldn't writing zeros...

How do I delete all my deleted files?

I have moved many many (about 120GB) of files to the trash, and emptied the trash. I just now learned that this does not actually delete the data, it just makes the data rewriteable. How do I actually delete all the files that I have emptied with the trash before? I do not want to erase free...

I used Disk Utility to erase free space on my hard drive, and now I have 0GB left on my disk! What do I do?

    Erase Free Space

If I open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD, and click "Erase Free Space" it says that it will write a 0 over all the free space. Does that mean that I'll end up with 0 GB free on my hard drive?

    Verification Failed

Will clicking "Erase Free Space" erase my data, or will I still have all my files?

    Verification Failed

Sorry. That was a mistake. I actually did repair the disk. I messed up typing it there.

    Verification Failed

I repaired the disk, but now I get the following error message: The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Backup the disk and use Disk Utility to format the disk as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp...

I tried to install Windows Vista with Boot Camp. Here are the specs for my computer: MacBook Pro (Late 2007): 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; 2 GB RAM; 185.99 GB Hard Drive; Running Mac OS 10.5.7 I am trying to partition my drive so that I have a 153 GB Mac partition and a 32 GB Windows partition...
