OSX registering into a Windows DNS

Thank you for your response however, I am not seeing anything you mention. No "Advance" button, no WIS tab. I am using OS X 10.4.11 if that helps. Yes, the Macs are bound to our domain via Directory Services. In your second paragraph do you mean to use DHCP with a manual IP address? I'll...

OSX registering into a Windows DNS

I have this problem also. I can manually add hosts to the DNS server but when the Macs get different IP address via DHCP the DNS entry doesn't get updated. Also, when setting up a new Mac the local hostname gets changed to whatever host had the IP address that is assigned. I have to manually...

    Homedrive sync serurity issues

I've been experimenting with this for the past few weeks on my own computer and I cannot find where it is saving the backup profile which makes me wonder if it is actually working correctly. I've looked at the server settings and every location I can think it might be, but still can't find it...

Lost power and now unable to log into account that was logged on

The problem occurred again on Friday and I had a chance to try a couple new fixes. Another post pointed to the local font cache that could cause the lock-up so I tried deleting the font cache and the Spotlight index and the user was able to log in normally. These commands did the trick: sudo...

Lost power and now unable to log into account that was logged on

After more research it appears that the problem isn't a permissions issue but very similar to this one, http://grimthing.com/archives/2006/01/07/Mac_OSX_Tiger_hangs_on_boot/ a corrupt Spotlight index database. I'll try rebuilding the index and see if the problem goes away.

Lost power and now unable to log into account that was logged on

I have this same problem with one particular iMac running 10.4.11. The identical iMac next to it has no problem. My solution is to recreate the Active Directory account for the user, log onto the iMac to create a new local profile, then rename or move the new profile, as admin, so the old...

Software Update Server and Non-Apple Software

No, I'm referring to my company's xserve update server, not Apple's. I know Apple wouldn't do such a thing.

Software Update Server and Non-Apple Software

Oh, I know about MacPorts and Fink but I was speaking in the OS X context. If third-party developers would package their apps in the same way that Apple does then they could be slipped into the Update Server by the admin and installed the same way. Kent

Software Update Server and Non-Apple Software

I have our Xserve's Software Update Server and Apple Remote Desktop configured to install updates on the Macs on our network. Is it possible to use the update server for non-Apple software like Firefox or for Adobe apps?

    Installing apps as admin

The Adobe Updater isn't made to work the way I want. I tried 'su admin' to run the updater from the CL and also tried 'su root.' In both cases it starts to run and then I get the message that it must be run with administrator rights. Apparently something in the updater gets passed back to the...

No, I'm not given that option with the Adobe Updater.

    Installing apps as admin

I have about four years experience with Linux but recently started Mac OS support and I'm still trying to work around some of the crippled parts of OS X. I have some users who need Adobe updates that have to be run as the local admin. Is it possible to run the updater as admin without logging...
