Airport Card Questions

What type of port does the airport card plug into? Is is a standard PCMCIA? or something proprietary?

Cause it seems that if you put an airport card into a pcmcia port upside down it fits and if you put a pcmcia card in the airport slot upside down that fits too (at least I think I've tried that before).

If the airport slot is proprietary, what kind of data transfer rates can it achieve? I know the airport card only goes up to 11 Mbps, but would the port be able to reach the 54 Mbps to work with an airport style airport extreme card (if such a device existed)?

PCMCIA cards certainly exist that support the 802.11g protocol. On Apple machines, however, no backwards-compatible Airport card is forthcoming. Theoretically a 3rd party could make an Airport Extreme card for older machines. Dr. Bott is the most likely vendor to be investigating this possibility. However, if the old-style Airport slot only internally supports 11Mbps then we're SOL.
