bash 2.05b on 10.1.5

[waiting_for_OSX]

I'm trying to run configure for bash 2.05b on OS X version 10.1.5 ( g4 cube ), running as root in tcsh

it gets to checking for cc... cc
then
checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

and fails

EDIT: It seems you can even ./configure
maybe someone else can help out
