BootCacheControl and launchctl/launchd

I posted earlier about my macbook pro not booting up. Still the case but I was able to get into single user mode and to view where it's getting stuck (by going into verbose mode on the failed safe boot). It's telling me that BootCacheControl "could not write playlist." What is the BootCacheControl, what does it make a playlist for and how can I resolve this issue?

Also it is saying that certain paths are not present. "Crucial filessytem check: Path not present: /var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd. Will create." then after that line are six lines that say "Bug: launchctl..." What is launchctl?

I admit full ignorance here but my google searches seem to suggest this has something to do with the dashboard??

I don't have a repair disk so it seems I have to rely on knowing how to use single user mode to fix this problem. Thing is, in addition to not being familiar with the tools available to me I also do not yet understand the problem, hence why I'm posting here. Help much appreciated!

Thx

p.s. and in case anyone was wondering I already ran fsck.
