can still connect to powerbook from pc

I am relatively new to mac networking. I have a g4 powerbook, osx 10.4, and a pc tower running xp. They are connected via an airport base station. I have not been able to successfully connect to the pc from the mac (says alias can not be found), but today I connected to the mac via the pc. I have full access to all my folders on the mac (read and write) from the pc. What disturbs me is that windows sharing is not on. I have even stopped personal file sharing, and I can still connect. As far as I am aware, I should only have access to my public folder on the mac, and shopuld only be able to write to the drop box. Can anyone tell me what might be going on, and how I can arrange for only limited access from pcs on the network?

So, tell me, on the windows folders you can access, are they shared? do they have the little hand icons under them?

When you say you have file sharing off; is that on the Mac, or PC.

As I recall, you can choose to share folders other than THE shared folder.

About the Mac to PC, hmmm...something about needing a username on the Mac that matches one on the PC exactly. That's what I had to do a while back; created a new user on my Mac, Toni, because the PC owner was Toni. Once I did that I could see the PC. I know this is vague, but that's what I had to do.
Try the GO menu on the Mac too, with the IP of the PC...

smb://192.168.0.1, or whatever
