Can you read a crash log? I need help!

I'm running a music program called Logic Pro 6.4.1

I seem to be getting quite a few panic crashes. I can't read the crash logs, but perhaps you might know what they mean. If you do, could you please tell me what the problem is? I'm running 10.3.3 on a G5 dual.

Thanks in advance.
Dean

I'm no expert, but a couple of things to say. For a start, its better if you give more details of your system, which G5 chip it is, how much RAM, and where the RAM came from. Panther is famously picky about third party RAM, so if you are comfortable about opening the case (having discharged any static), you should try taking such RAM out and see if you have the same problem.

Fraid i could only speculate wildly at the meaning of your crash logs, but i'm sure some of the other round here will be able to tell you more.

Ora,

I do have some third party Ram in the G5 dual. I'll have to open it, and tell you what they are. I don't remember this happening with 10.1 to 10.3.2. Maybe the ram has gone bad, I don't know, but I'll look into it.

Bob,

Thanks for the link.

Way back several years ago, I purchased some three 256MB RAM cards from Other World Computing. One of them was bad, caused kernel panics in Mac OS X, but not in Mac OS 9. When I figured out what card was bad, and replaced it, everything worked fine. By the way, the 256MB RAM I bought was the cheapest I found on the internet. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Did your computer come with a diagnostic CD for checking the hardware? It should show you if you have a bad RAM module or not.

TechTool 4 will check the RAM as well.

I'm no expert at reading crash logs, but the first two do mention ATI drivers....perhaps a conflict with the graphics drivers????? just a guess.

All three panics mention PCI, and two of them mention the Radeon driver - I suppose then it's probably a PCI video card?

Do you have any other PCI cards that might be causing the problem?

google (or yahoo, or your neighbour) is your friend!

the first hits for a search on 'AppleU3ART: Out of IOVM Space' is a post on an apple-list, where someone explains what most likely causes the problem.
now, this post is on the apple-firewire (dev) list, and from what i understand from the story below, is that firewire uses the same (kind of?) 32bit physical addresses as PCI. on a g5 64 bit addresses have to be mapped into 32bit ones, and that's where someone is leaking something, so the 'IOVM Space' slowly fills-up with the error as a result:
'Out of IOVM Space'.

i don't know anything about address-spaces or hardware-busses, but it sounds plausible to me:) i hope it makes sense to you...

basically the conclusion is that some software, most likely a driver (pci-card, firewire device? are you usiing any?) is badly programmed and causing the problem.
the logs only show dependecies in apple-made drivers, but from what i know that doesn't mean they are causing the problem. my guess is that you're using some audio hardware on a pci or firewire bus which is bad.

try uninstalling 3rd party drivers for such hardware, and see if the problem still exists. if not, contact the maker of the driver and ask for better software :)

also, you're not by any chance using old drivers that might not be compatible with panther?
and you may want to consider to upgrade to tiger?

from: http://lists.apple.com/archives/firewire/2004/Feb/msg00021.html

It sounds like you're leaking prepare()ed memory descriptors, check if you're allocating IOMemoryDescriptors without freeing them, or calling IOMemoryDescriptor::prepare() without a matching IOMemoryDescriptor::complete().

The AppleU3ART driver maps 64 bit physical addresses into 32 bit PCI ones, its tables are filling up.

William

hope that helped..

..but the first two do mention ATI drivers...
if you look close, you'll notice that it's virtually all pci-bus related hardware-drivers. AND they're all apples'.. prob. just the whole bus died.
