Column view weirdness on login

I find that the first time I open Finder after I log in, it shows five columns. Every other time I open it I get four. Anyone know why this would happen?

I am having a simular problem, in fact I was about to start a thread... whenever finder is launched (at startup or relaunched) it "forgets" my default view for my HD window... it goes to icon view when it should be in column view... any help would be appreciated...

This might help http://www.osxfaq.com/dailytips/04-2002/04-30.ws. I found that setting up the Finder logged in as root does "stick" when logged in as my normal user even after logouts and restarts.
