I want to convert rmvb to preferably mp4 or mov however avi would also be fine, does anyone have any solutions?

This is possible with ffmpegX, but only if you jump through some hoops first. First, you need to install the "Binary Codec Packages" from the MPlayer web site. Since ffmpegX uses the same tools to do its dirty work, this codec pack applies to it, as well.
Then, open your rmvb in ffmpegX, and be sure to select one of the video encoders that is based on mencoder. The others won't work.
That should do it. At least it did for me, on my G4 Mac Mini.

I recommend "Xvid [.AVI] (mencoder)".
It depends on what you want to do with the movie, though. If you want it to be compatible with an iPod or AppleTV, you should probably use "H264 [.mp4] (mencoder)". I'm not 100% sure even that will be compatible with iPods or AppleTVs, though. It should, in theory, but I've never tried it.
