Copying files between external discs

Hello. I have two 2TB Lacie EHD connected to my MacBookPro and I am trying to move some directories from one to the other. I keep having the copying process stop with a message that says "The operation can’t be completed because the item “(name of folder)” is in use." Obviously I am not using those files, I have tried shutting down the computer off and back on, not opening any other app, obviously disabling TimeMachine, but I still get that message.
I have the theory that it must be some kind of scanning program in the background but I do not know how to check this in a Mac.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

There is a much better way to do this than drag and drop. Maybe you should consider a different method. What are you trying to achieve?
